Refugium filtration is a natural means of Aquarium filtration which uses Macro algae ( plants) to remove micro nutrients (disolved organic compounds i.e. Phosphates,Nitrates etc.) from a marine aquarium system. The refugium plants (Cheatomorpha,Caleurpa etc.) use these compounds to grow while successfuly competing w/ unwanted micro algae. The macro algae in a refugium also consume Co2 which effects Aquarium ph in a positive way. The refugium is also a place for Micro fauna such as copepods, amphepods and other Zooplankton (coral food) to grow and reproduce in an environment with less predation than the main reef tank.
